Update on Kitten [Dec. 26th, 2009|08:42 pm]

Meet Mulatka!

In 12 hours, this little kitten went from life on the streets to wearing a collar and sleeping in a warm bed. This was a real Christmas miracle, if you go for that sort of thing, which in this case even an atheist like me can do. My fears were completely unfounded, she is with a wonderful family. The wife is Russian, and they named her Mulatka, which is Russian for "mulatto" - a mix of "White European and Native Indian" as they put it to me. They call her Munya, which is a traditional Russian diminutive form; diminutives don't always take the exact form of the original name, think of Sasha, which is a nickname for Aleksandr.

She has used her litter box properly, chowed down on some nice dry food, and even had some of the special milk they make for cats. When her new mom and dad are going to sleep at night, she likes to get right in between them and sleep in the crook of his arm. She apparently insists on sleeping in their bed and rejects the bed they got her! She hid in the closet at first when they brought her home but now she is talkative and affectionate!

I got in really deep trouble for bringing her home, to be honest. But it was so worth it. I'll never try such a hare-brained scheme again - and I don't think I could ever foster a cat for real, it's too hard to let go - but damn, it was worth it. And it WORKED. And Munya is on her way to a nice new life. I just hope the vets give her a clean bill of health!

I am being sent pictures and they are all going up here. Look at her little pink collar!

MRI update and Christmas [Dec. 25th, 2009|06:38 pm]

mrj5068
well, I am just so not good at doing updates on this thing.  all I am going to post is that my follow up MRI to my surgery in Aug was clear and the Dr said she wants me to come back in 6 months for my next one.  She said she was impressed with the current one.
My back MRI that I had done before I realized my surgery was back didn't look good though.  I have L3-L4 Stenosis, 2 slipped discs and thickening ligamnets.  She said I should be major pain and although my back hurts all the time, I am not in that kind of pain.
I had a sleep study done and I have bad sleep apnea.  5 apneas or less is common for just about everyone actually.. and 30 apneas is considered pretty extreme and I have 105.  TERRIBLE!!!  so now I sleep with a BiPAP mask at might that forces air into my lungs so I don't have apneas and have better sleep.  I do go to sleep week with it, but I wake up anywhere between 2 and 4 each night and remove it and sleep the rest of the time with out it.  I admit it does help me get better sleep though.
I have also lost an old cap on a tooth that is over 20 yrs old and it can't be put back in, so now my only choice is an implant or a bridge.  I chose the bridge as it is way cheaper and takes less time at the dentist office to complete.
Chad and I got stuck at home for Christmas because the weather is really bad.  It's driveable but dangerous here in KC but that is not what worries or us,, or chad mostly.. it is the ice in joplin and nw ark.  its a call that is hard to make but we have decided we will just go visit the families in January when the weather gets better.. hope it does.. LOL.

Oh, chad and I bought ourselves a 42" LCD tv and an xbox for the spare room and turned it into the "Man Cave".  We have spent lots of time in there today playing Left 4 Dead and killing zombies..  that game is so much fun...  Chad is also playing Batman: Arkham Asylum but I not in to that one.
guess that is all I have to report for now.
Hope everyone had a Merry White Safe Christmas and hope you all have a Fantastic Happy New Year's and be safe then too!!!

Chairs [Dec. 25th, 2009|03:18 pm]

shyleatherboy
Because of the massive overflow of people we had to use the two office chairs for Christmas dinner. Of course Alec and Dria, the two children that are just awful want to sit in the rolling chairs. I told them no, and my mom told them no. Of course their parents said, "sure you can honey." It just makes me sick, they are some of the most inconsiderate and obnoxious people I know. My step dad is furious. Anyway, time to eat. Miss everyone a lot. ttyl

it's better to give than receive [Dec. 25th, 2009|01:03 pm]

leatherwolf1970
So this morning I woke up knowing that I made the day special for seven kids with hiv here in St. Louis. This year I managed to donate 7 bikes. 4 boys and 3 girls with locks as well as assorted oversized stuffed animals and a few odds and ends. I was in a pissy mood last night so I said fuck it and went out in search of xmas cheer. I threw some darts (alone, yeah that's always fun) and made the rounds between Bad Dogs and JJ's. I wasn't finding any xmas cheer so I created my own. I tipped three bartenders a rather generous tip. I didn't say anything to them, just signed the receipt and wrote merry xmas on it and walked out. I did get a note through face book from one of them thanking me already. He said I really made his night and that makes me feel good. Hell it isn't like I have anyone to buy anything for. Not here locally in STL at least.

As for me.... well I didn't even bother to put up a tree.....

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In October I pulled over and changed [info]jimmietucker's flat tire (15 points). Last Saturday I had a shoot-out with rival gang lords on the 5 near LA (-76 points). In July I gave [info]sttatus_quo a kidney (1000 points). Last Wednesday I ate my brussel sprouts (1 points). Last month I punched [info]wakarimashta in the arm (-10 points).

Overall, I've been nice (930 points). For Christmas I deserve a Sony Playstation 3!

Sincerely,
shyleatherboy

Christmas Eve [Dec. 24th, 2009|10:45 pm]

shyleatherboy
It's Christmas Eve, and I feel like I need to jot this down. This year has been truly amazing. Seeing Christmas through eyes that have in the past year been baptized really is different. The Christmas Carols that I've sung my entire life have a new meaning. I hope that all of my family and friends have a great holiday. After my car accident I'm just so grateful to be here.

Saving a Kitten [Dec. 24th, 2009|11:49 pm]

[Tags|, , , , ]

I did a very hard thing today. I saved a kitten's life.

She had been hanging around the home of [info]seekerofspace and others, and they were feeding her. I was caring for the resident cat and dog this week, and they asked me to keep an eye on the kitten as well (dubbed Esther). In a hare-brained scheme that got me in a lot of trouble, I brought her home tonight and found her a home.

As soon as I got to the house at lunchtime, I grabbed Esther and put her in a closed room. I got the resident cat's carrier and put the kitten in it with some food and water, out of the reach of the dog - but Parker, the resident cat, still jumped up and sniffed. He left her alone though, and she ate the food ravenously - as she always does.

I called the lady at Capital Cats and she suggested I call the Washington Animal Rescue League. Naturally, they were closed for Xmas Eve. I knew that now that she was in the carrier, she had to come home. I tried looking into rental cars - I had taken metro downtown, my car is still snowed in - but they were all closing too early. So I put a blanket over the carrier and off we went back to Gallaudet. That's a 0.6 mile walk, and she did not like it.

I looked on the WMATA website, and it turns out you CAN take animals on board in secure containers. So...onto the Gallaudet shuttle (where she got lots of attention) we went. She cried every time she was carried, and every time she was put down, she settled. I could feel her walking around in the carrier as we walked, it could not have been too comfortable, but she didn't know to sit down!

The metro ride was entirely uneventful, she quieted down quickly. I took a cab home and ushered her upstairs to the spare room. We ended up in the bathroom because I didn't know if she was litter-trained. I had food, water, a litter box, and a pad for her to sleep on, but she was having none of it - I was the bed of choice. She fell asleep literally in my hands, poor thing must have been so exhausted after the long trip! While she was in my hands, she twitched as cats do when they're sleeping. I sat there for a while and finally managed to extricate one hand so I could use my phone and netbook.

The Capital Cats lady had also suggested Craigslist, so that's what I did. I posted some pictures and got a few responses quickly. I ended up interviewing the first guy for two hours over email, and I was satisfied that although he wasn't too knowledgeable about cats - having grown up with dogs - his wife had grown up with cats and she would be okay. I made damn sure this was as close to a forever home as I could hope to find for little Esther. She can't be more than 6-8 months old, judging by size. I had NO health info, only that she didn't seem to have fleas or mites - she wasn't scratching or worrying any spots.

So after a long exchange of emails - she was on my lap the entire time - I finally had the guy come over. He didn't have much in the way of a carrier, but we made it work and he said he was going to buy a carrier. This made me a little apprehensive, but I think we got her well secured and on the way. I looked out the window as he left - I think he even buckled the carrier into the front seat, a nice touch, something I have always done myself. The sweet thing was that he gave me a Xmas card, obviously picked up on his way over, saying "From [his name], [his wife's name], and Kitten" - it was cute. They're a young couple and they just got approved for their first apartment together.

I worry a little, honestly. I didn't have the luxury of screening their place. I didn't meet the wife. But he assured me they would send vet records, pictures, anything I wanted. I hope I did the right thing. I think I did. But there's that nagging worry. Is a two-hour interview enough? What if I made a mistake? I hope she'll be okay. She is very sweet and friendly, I think she will be okay. But I still worry...I guess because no home would have been as good as my home. But I couldn't keep her.

I'm officially never fostering a cat again, even for a few hours like I did today. For pete's sake, she slept in my lap the whole time, she pawed at my face, she was so sweet and cute...I could never do this again. Which as just as well, because my wife yelled at me for at least half an hour over bringing her home. Which, yeah, it was hare-brained. But it worked out.

I tell myself this: 12 hours ago, she was on the streets, cold and hungry all the time. Now, she's in a home, warm and fed and loved. She had that with me, but I couldn't give it to her forever. I tried to find someone who would love her as much as me. I did the best I could, but I'm still so heartbroken that I had to let her go.

Pictures and video here.

Christmas Eve..and Fish [Dec. 24th, 2009|06:17 pm]

archers_elegant
I've made it 7 days with the fish Master's dad visiting...I think tonight I really need peas on earth.

He's not really a man of traditions. He wondered why I was making spritz cookies and sausage balls the other day. Habits are not the same as traditions. I had mentioned making some nice raviolis with a light parmesan sauce tonight. He asked if we had an canned spaghetti & meatballs. sigh

But I must count my blessings that he has been here..so much done! We have a gas line run to the grill (after 2 years) and all kinds of little house tasks completed. I plan on grilling a lot in the next few weeks!

Today Master and I escaped for a while and went on a surprise visit to see [info]prismfire (and her daughter) at work. Master got a professional head shave and beard trim and we shared some holiday joy..and had a great piece of homemade pie. Then we did a last minute shopping trip (I love going to get one gift on Christmas eve..something I know I can get without trouble but still enjoy the holiday madness). Of course we had to make one last stop by the grocery store..sugar (for the chocolate chess pie), american cheese slices (dad-in law request) and Coke.

The teenkidlets called a few minutes ago. They are at their dads tonight and come over at 10:00 am tomorrow. That's when my Christmas celebration starts! I've planned a brunch: baked eggs and cheese, honey ham, spanikopita, fresh fruit salad, biscuits..and sweets and pie later.

We have a fire crackling...three dogs (2 visiting) and a kitty snoozing on the floor and the menfolk watching Yard Crashers Christmas. I'm going to have a glass of wine and sit by the fire.

Happy Christmas.

public speaking for climate change legislation 2

Yesterday was mostly packing and general getting ready. We went over to the Loop for lunch at Fitz's and got stopped by a couple of cute guys who wanted us to make a video promoting climate change legislation sponsored by RePowerAmerica.org. i'm all in favor of that, so i gave it a shot. Easy activism. Sometimes it's as easy as writing an email or making a phone call. Or shooting a video on a streetcorner. Gotta start somewhere...

We went to Dollywood today and had a great time!! I'm really tired and just got out of the shower so I'm headed to bed. We are going shopping tomorrow at the mall, and possibly going to see a movie. I'm hoping we'll go see the Blind Side, I'd like to see it again.

OK, so it's beautiful and the art direction is amazing and the 3D really gets you. But the story is so friggin' stupid. Evil corporation hires blood-thirsty ex-Marines spouting every cliche'd line you've ever heard a million times before. The indiginous people are a cross between Native Americans and African tribalism and they're so stereotypical as to be insulting. There are absolutely no surprises to this movie and if you can't figure out the ending with an hour and a half left to go, you must be 12 years old. That being said, the spectacle is really something and the 3D really pulls you in. They say Cameron came up with this when he was 15 and that would be back in the '70s and it's obvious he got his inspiration from album cover art painted by Roger Dean. The red dragon? Uriah Heep's "Magician's Birthday". The floating mountains? Yes' "Tales From Topagraphic Oceans". So, anyway, thanks for the technology. Now let's give it to someone who can do something with it. This is the TRON of the new millenium. Beautiful garbage. \soapbox.

3D Glasses the shredder

When we got home, it was time to face the mountain of junk mail and stuff that has built up over the last couple of months. Seriously...some of this stuff has been sitting around that long. When i come home, i just have too much stuff to do that i don't want to deal with it. Sure, i'll look at the important things. A lot i set aside to deal with "later', though later never comes. Plus a lot has personal info or credit offers that i need to shred. Well, today was the day and it took an hour or so while Matt played L4D, but it's done. For now.

My step dad is already (7:00am)at it. He's pissed at my mother and keeps telling her that she does things just to defy him. She then replies with something along the lines of "you're not my father remember, I keep telling you..." I had to go to my "room" and put headphones on so that I can't hear them arguing anymore. I'm just so thankful that I don't live here/with them anymore.

Christmas in the Smokies pt1 [Dec. 21st, 2009|10:00 pm]

shyleatherboy
Well Alan and Sandi and their two kids arrived today. They drove from San Antonio. They are wanting to move here but can't until they sell their house in Texas. My trip has been great so far. I'm having a hard time dealing with my mom and these other people though. She keeps ignoring me and only dealing with them. I got the whole, "I need Grandkids" speech twice already. There have been a few rather negative jokes about gay people from the other family that is staying here, they have no idea that i'm gay and i'm out to my mother. I did make it known that I didn't think their jokes were very funny. We're going to Dollywood tomorrow, that should be fun. Pete didn't think I'd want to go this year because I've been so many times in the past but I really do like going. My mom had said that we'd go see the blind side, I want to see it again, and now that they are here they don't want to see it so we won't be going. They take forever to get ready and when we are out they are slow as hell. We spent 2 hours at target tonight. WTF can you do in Target for 2 hours. It was pretty bad, even my mom asked Sandi if they were ready yet. I've been relegated to an air mattress for the remainder of the week, this does not please me. I'm so ready to come home. I just keep reminding myself that they'll only be here till Saturday and then I'll have some time with my mom. It wouldn't have been so bad except the first few days I was here without them my mom had me getting the house ready for them to be here. Just a constant reminder that I really wish they weren't here/ weren't coming. Sandi tried to tell me thank you for giving up the bed, and I didn't know what to say, I feel like if I say "you're welcome" its like I'm saying I'm ok with it, and I'm really not. I just pretended like I didn't hear her and moved on.

red friends

Mike and Glen were inside the city limits this morning from their self-imposed exile out in St Chuck and we got together for lunch and then came back and hung out for awhile to catch up. Afterwards, it was time to address the issue with Matt's battery. During last week's cold snap, it wouldn't start for him, but thn started right up as the thermometer rose. This morning as we were leaving for lunch, it wouldn't start again. But when we got back and got the old truck (which has no problems starting) in place to jump it, it turned over. Matt had checked a couple of shops this week, but it was a special size and would have to be ordered. Sure, we only paid $13k for a 7-year-old (at the time) Merc' - which i still say was a smart move since it's pushing a quarter mil' and still running strong and looks great - but sometimes upkeep can be a bit on the pricey side.

DieHards

The biggest issue with swapping out the battery is the theft-proof radio. Once you lose the juice, you have to enter a code to get it to work again. We went through this the last time and i'm sure i've got the email from MB in my inbox somewhere since i keep EVERYthing. But the liquid crystal display on the radio doesn't work anymore so we wouldn't be able to read the prompts. i had contemplated some kinda Rube Goldbergesque solution like using jumper cables from the new battery to the engine while we swapped them out, but Matt could only envision us coated with battery acid eating away our flesh after i'd blown the damn things up. Fuck it, i figured Sears would have a solution. Hell, every car's got computers and stuff that need constant power and sure enough, they had a way to keep low wattage juice to the system to keep a feed while they swapped it out. And they had the right battery in stock. So off we went and an hour or so later we had a new battery.

i don't care what my stomach says, my liver misses you take me out

On the way home, we stopped at the store so Matt could get the final fixin's for a pineapple-upside-down cake. Matt had to pause by the holiday liquor displays to say hey to the Crown Royal boxes (with NEW LOOK!!). He loved his Crown-on-the-rocks, but his tummy just won't have it anymore which is why he doesn't like going out as much anymore. Poor baby. i dropped him by the house to get started on his cake and went to Old St Louis Chop Suey ("CASH ONRY!!") for some of the yummiest chinese in town. Sure, we'd just gone to Mekong the night before, but that's actually Vietnamese. Beside, the Chinese eat chinese pretty much every night and yadda-yadda million chinese can't be wrong.

Saturday came and went. There was some shopping at Target involved. Catching up on LJ and flickr. A nap. Just trying to forget work and rest a bit. Robert came by and we got some dinner and He and Matt played L4D some. Matt went to the Cheap Trx xmas party and Sir put my collar on me and took me to the Blue Max leather club xmas night at the bar. It was the best night out i'd had in a long time. Probably because with my collar on, i can just let all my worries and cares go away since i don't have control over them anymore. Some of you won't understand, but it's really just that simple. The look was quite popular and some of the twinks and the Seagrams "Honey"s that were there hawking their stuff wanted a pic with me instead of the club's Santa. i told 'em, "Sure...did you give the club your $5 for their charity? OK, then let's go!" That's Kenny, Robert, the ever-cute Jason & Dustin with lil' Jason of Jason & Jason fame (man, i know a lot of Jasons!) front and center. Notice the one random dude who crashed our picture peeking over my shoulder? LOL! We had a wonderful and relaxing evening and Sir took off my collar and dropped me off about 2:30. i thought that Matt would have been in bed hours ago, but as it turns out he was up past 2 with Robert/[info]shadowwolf1970 and Josh/[info]fuzzywuzzycub killin' zombies. So, i'd say a pleasant time was had by all.

Men At Work [Dec. 20th, 2009|01:44 pm]

archers_elegant
Master Archer and Dallas installed a ceiling fan in our family room yesterday. This morning they took it down and installed another. Sheesh.

Master's mother had given us a used ceiling fan and we've been wanting to put it in the family room since we moved here. Alas, this called for running power to the tall peaked ceiling (and I did not want a conduit across the ceiling).  Added to the fact that our 6' ladder does not work to reach a 12 foot peek.....dad-in-law to the rescue!

So after the shop vac debacle the hand-me-down ceiling fan was installed. We sat and watched the blades turn and the men smiled at their handiwork...and then the fan stopped. Master pulled the chain (no nasty comments, please) a few times and *popsizzle* dead lighted ceiling fan.

Off to Lowe's this morning to choose a new ceiling fan..either that or repair the hole in the ceiling. Dad-in-law gave us yet another Christmas gift. I think the man is really Santa!
